Hi, my name is Denis Murray and I am from South Kingston, Rhode Island. I am going to URI with the hope of becoming a teacher. Teachers have always been hit or miss with me in the way they teach. Many of them think that I want to be helped along with every step of every problem or project, when all I wanted was to be independent. So academically I never did great, but I always got by just fine. I usually tried to take the harder classes even If my grades suffered a little bit. I like to challenge myself both mentally and physically. I taught myself how to play both jazz and classical bass and six-string guitar. And two summers ago I rode my bike from Albany to NYC in three days, and just days after that I hiked the presidential traverse in the White Mountains.
One of the best things I have done is joined the boy scouts and fallowed through with them by becoming an eagle scout. I joined scouts with a group of friends and from the beginning I knew that I wanted to be an eagle scout. So I did the classic thing in boy scouts, I shot through the first couple of ranks and sat around at camp doing nothing until I turned 17. Once I hit 17 I had to kick it into high gear and get my work done, merit badges had to be done and a project needed to be planned, approved, and completed in less than year. I eventually got all of the work done and completed all the requirements for becoming eagle 9 days before my 18th birthday. So what I am trying to say is that I like a challenge and I would rather do my work without help, but I know when to ask.
